De Haarlemmermeerlijnen, een stoomtreintje dat tussen Leiden, Haarlem, Aalsmeer, Alphen en Amsterdam reed, is al ruim 70 jaar gesloten. Toch is het merendeel van het spoor nog steeds terug te vinden. Vaak is het vermomd als fietspad of autoweg, soms als schapenweitje, voetbalveldje of langwerpig natuurgebiedje. Twee wandelingen voeren langs en over het spoor tussen Aalsmeer en Haarlem. U kunt de terugweg het best met de bus afleggen, dus het kan geen kwaad om een strippenkaart mee te nemen. De tweede wandeling van Hoofddorp naar Aalsmeer, die langs een van de drukste maar ook interessantste stukjes van Haarlemmermeer voert.
Beginpunt van de wandelingen is steeds het Historisch Museum Haarlemmermeer aan de Kruisweg 1403 in Hoofddorp. In dit museum is tot voorjaar 2008 een tijdelijke tentoonstelling gewijd aan de spoorlijnen door de polder, met nadruk op de opkomst en ondergang van de Haarlemmermeerlijnen.
Het eerste deel tot de Pabstlaan is hetzelfde als de vorige wandeling: bij de uitgang van het museum, naar rechts langs de bistro Dik Trom, vervolgens bij de ventweg langs de N201 linksaf. De ventweg blijven volgen door het bos naar de grote kruising met de N201. Deze kruising oversteken en op de Kruisweg naar links, richting centrum. Op de kruising Kruisweg-Burgemeester Pastlaan naar links. Deze weg is precies op het oude spoor gelegd.
De Pabstlaan, die geleidelijk, net als het spoor vroeger, een bocht naar rechts maakt, blijven volgen. Ter hoogte van Pabstlaan 16 komt u de oude wisselwachterswoning tegen, die nog een behoorlijk authentieke staat verkeert. Even verderop vindt u het oude station Hoofddorp.
Pabstlaan blijven volgen. Bij de kruising met de Nieuweweg oversteken en het voetpad volgen door de groenstrook links langs de kerk.
Pad blijven volgen tot aan de kruising met de Boslaan. Oversteken en de Van der Burchstraat inlopen. Deze straat gaat na ongeveer honderd meter over in de straat Kalorama. Bij de Kagertocht vindt u twee in goede staat verkerende bruggenhoofden. Het spoor wordt aan het einde van de Kalorama afgesneden door de Weg om de Noord.
Om het spoor weer te zien, moet u een flink ommetje maken: als Kalorama naar links afbuigt, moet u rechts, een smal wandelpad op. Dit pad volgen tot u weer aan de Kruisweg bent. Daar links, naar de Weg om de Noord, bij de meubelzaken oversteken en daar rechts, richting Kruisweg. Langs de ventweg blijven lopen tot de Rijnlanderweg, daar linksaf slaan. Bij de Hoeksteen het fietspad oplopen.
U bevindt zich nu weer op het oude spoor. De Hoeksteen buigt vlak voor de rijksweg A4 en A5 naar rechts. U moet deze weg blijven volgen, maar kunt hier beter oversteken en in de berm lopen. Bij de kruisweg naar links, onder het viaduct door van de rijkswegen, de oprit oversteken en de weg vervolgen over de ventweg langs de Kruisweg/N201. U loopt nu niet langs het spoor. Dat bevindt zich ongeveer 200 meter naar het noorden en loopt langs de kop van de Kaagbaan.
Bij de Aalsmeerderweg linksaf. Aan uw linkerhand komt u, inderdaad na ongeveer 200 meter, verscholen tussen het opgeschoten groen, station Aalsmeerderweg tegen. Bij dit stationnetje kunt op twee manieren uw weg vervolgen: over het spoor, door het groen, of comfortabel over de weg. Als u over het spoor wilt: steek tegenover het stationnetje de Aalsmeerderweg over en loop over de groenstrook tussen akkers en kassen. Hoewel het onkruid er meestal hoog staat, is het redelijk goed begaanbaar. Aan het einde van de strook loopt u de Beechavenue op. Steek de Fokkerweg over naar het wandelparkje langs de Boeingavenue. Dit is allemaal nog steeds het oude spoor.
De comfortabele weg: Keer na een bezoek aan station Aalsmeerderweg terug naar de Kruisweg/N201. Ga daar links, richting Aalsmeer. Bij de afslag naar de Beechavenue naar links, deze avenue volgen naar de Fokkerweg en die oversteken naar het wandelparkje langs de Boeingavenue. Ook hier bent u weer aangeland op het oude spoor.
Volg het parkje naar de ringdijk – hier Aalsmeerderdijk geheten. Hier lag ooit het grootste bouwwerk van de Haarlemmermeerlijnen, de brug over de Ringvaart. Op de Aalsmeerderdijk naar rechts, naar de huidige brug over de Ringvaart, bij de Oosteindeweg naar links. Deze weg volgen tot aan de kruising met de Oude Spoordijk. Hier rechts, via een klein stukje ‘eigen weg’ naar het Spoorlijnpad. Pad volgen tot aan het Bielzenpad. Hier was een van de grote splistingen in het net. De lijn naar het noorden ging naar Amstelveen en Amsterdam, de lijn naar het oosten naar Uithoorn. U moet rechtsaf, de straat de Wissel in. Het straatje slingert enigszins, maar u moet het zo recht mogelijk doorlopen, naar de straat Baanvak. Deze weg vervolgen, over de N201 heen, tot de T splitsing met Seinpost en Ketelhuis. Hier linksaf, de Seinpost in, en meteen daarna rechtsaf, de Gerberastraat in. U loopt nu langs het voormalige emplacement van station Aalsmeer. Volg de Gerberastraat tot de Stommeerkade/Stationsstraat, daar rechtsaf. Na enkele tientallen meters arriveert u bij station Aalsmeer. Een eindje verder, bij het Drie Kolommenplein vindt u een bushalte, waar de lijnen 79 en 140 u terugvoeren naar de halte Overbos in Hoofddorp. Via een tunneltje kunt u daar onder de N201 door. Na het tunneltje links aanhouden. Enkele honderden meters verder vindt u het historisch museum.
